"Volunteers are the roots of Strong Communities"

National Volunteer Week: April 10 - 16, 2016

The time and talent alumni bring back to campus through your life experience is crucial in sustaining the high quality education Mount Royal offers. You help faculty by sharing your expertise as guests speakers in the classroom, you participate in panel discussions at student conferences and at Alumni Group events and many of you participate as mentors in the Harry G. Schaefer Mentorship Program. Your time, your skills, your commitment to your Alma mater means a lot to us and even more to the students. You may think the time you give is small but it makes a huge impact and keeps our MRU community strong. Thank you!

Volunteering is an excellent way to gain experience, learn new skills, expand your network and enrich your resume. You'll read more about this in our first blog post from Career Services we're featuring in this issue of True Blue. If you're interested in bringing your expertise to Alumni Groups, we'd love to hear from you! Plus, don't forget to register for the LinkedIn seminar coming up next month.

Alumni Groups
What's happened:
March saw a flurry of activity with four Alumni Groups hosting events including Interior Design, Sport and Recreation, Information Design, and Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership.

Primarily, It's a Party (an annual event hosted by the Interior Design Alumni Chapter) raised over $20,000 for design students! This exceptional event took place on March 10 and invited students, alumni and industry professionals to celebrate their partnerships as they networked, took part in a raffle, and raised money for scholarships and classroom materials.

What's coming up:
On April 23, the Athletic Therapy Alumni Chapter will host a screening of the film Concussion, followed by a panel of experts discussing what the movie got right and wrong. Get in touch with James at
jjparsons@mtroyal.ca if you'd like to attend.

We're looking for volunteer leaders for a number of Chapters just getting off the ground. If you're interested in Health Sciences, Nursing, Public Relations, Social Work, Broadcasting or Business, get in touch with James at jjparsons@mtroyal.ca
