National Depression Screening Day Oct. 11
Take a free, quick and anonymous test at test4depression.com. One in 10 Canadians experiences depression at some time in life. The MRU Employee Family Assistance Program provides

Diversity and Inclusion Survey results drop-in sessions
Plan to attend drop-in sessions to explore the findings of Mount Royal's first Diversity and Inclusion Survey. Members of Campus Equity and Meaningful Inclusion, Human Resources and the survey dissemination team will be on hand to share the report, answer questions and explore next steps. Drop-ins take place Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the
Ideas Visualization Lounge.

September fire drill most efficient to date
The Sept. 24 fire drill was the most efficient so far, based on monitoring by Security Services and Risk Management. For the next drill, as you leave the building please keep moving to the muster points to help reduce congestion, especially at the East Gate. If you need help during a drill or an actual emergency, find a member of Security Services or an Emergency Warden.

Take care walking on campus
The snow and ice have made for some slippery walkways. MRU's Grounds team is working hard to keep pathways clear. Please be extremely cautious when walking on icy surfaces. Report hazardous conditions to Security at 403.440.6897. Tips to prevent falls can be found here.

Keep liquids out of mixed recycle bins
Remember to please empty your coffee and cold drink cups before putting them in the mixed recycle bins. Liquids contaminate the bin contents, meaning nothing in the bin can be recycled and must go to the landfill instead. This results in a fine for MRU. More recycling tips can be found here.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month
Join the Cyber Security Challenge and participate in events all month long for Cyber Security Awareness Month. Check the event calendar and the IT Security newsletter every week in October to participate and get entry codes for a draw for a $250 Best Buy gift certificate.

Each month Wellness Heroes showcases Mount Royal University employees who incorporate elements of wellness into their daily routine. Meet Susan-Garrow-Oliver, an associate professor in the Faculty of Child Studies and Social Work who initiated the Wednesday Walker Club.

Sport and recreation students recognized nationally
Two Bachelor of Health and Physical Education — Sport and Recreation Management students received national awards from the Canadian Society of Club Managers (CSCM). Chris Jennings won the Young Professional Award and Matt Paley won the Val Mason Scholarship. The CSCM provides scholarships to individuals who are pursuing a career in club management.

Loneliness in LGBTQ2+ immigrants revealed
Professor Yasmin Dean, PhD and chair of the Department of Child Studies and Social Work and Serbian refugee Boban Stojanovic penned an article titled “Identification, please,” set to be published in a third-party social work newsletter and which delves into the complicated experiences of LGBTQ2+ immigrants to Canada. Students headed to Norway to discuss interdisciplinary research
Mount Royal students Jessica Barabas and Tayler Delannoy of the Faculty of Health, Community and Education are reaching an international audience with their research. They are headed to the ISSOTL 2018 Conference in Norway this month to discuss their investigation into whether capstone projects in their faculty could be interdisciplinary.

Gross motor competence study published
On Sept. 27, Bachelor of Health and Physical Education — Physical Literacy professor Dwayne Sheehan, PhD, co-published, “Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, Gross Motor Competence and Peak Height Velocity in 10- to 14-Year-Old Canadian Youth: A Longitudinal Study,” with Karin Lienhard, PhD, of the University of Calgary. On Sept. 24, Department of Health and Physical Education adjunct professor, Stephen Norris, PhD, was appointed chair of the Alberta Sports Connection Board of Directors. More.

As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
