New Student Orientation has great reach

More than 1,200 new students attended NSO online at the beginning of September, with activities throughout the summer engaging hundreds more. Parents and international students were also in attendance at NSO.

Positive COVID-19 case
A member of the MRU community who was on campus last week has tested positive for COVID-19. The person is now self isolating. If you don’t receive notification from MRU or AHS, you have not been in contact with this individual.

10 ways you can help the MRU campus community stay healthy and safe
If you are coming to campus, please follow these steps

1. Complete this orientation if you will be on campus frequently during the semester
2. Fill out the employee health declaration form each day you come to campus
On campus
3. In public indoor spaces, wear a mask
4. Limit socializing, only go where you need to go on campus, and do not go into closed or restricted areas
5. Stay at least two metres away from others
6. Disinfect your hands when you enter a space
7. Follow campus floor markings and signage
8. Keep personal belongings with you: do not share food or personal items
9. Clean your own space and follow protocols for sanitizing shared spaces and equipment
10. If you begin to have symptoms on campus, let your supervisor or instructor know


Continue to refer to the detailed People Plan for appropriate protocols for differing situations.


Budget Town Hall on Sept. 30
The Budget Town Hall has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. This additional time will allow for more budget information to be gathered and included. Further details will be communicated closer to that date.

Ensure your Code of Conduct compliance is up to date
All employees must abide by the Code of Conduct mandated by the provincial government in 2019. Please review the Code and FAQ. If your situation has changed since last year, submit a new disclosure form.


Cybersecurity Awareness Month is coming

October is Cybsersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM). Learn new skills and win prizes in a virtual treasure hunt, the Cybercrime Series and a new Cybersecurity Challenge. Visit the CSAM hub to stay up to date on all the activities.

Celebrating Healthcare Simulation Week
In celebrating Healthcare Simulation Week from Sept. 14 to 18, the Faculty of Health, Commmunity and Education has been hosting a series of virtual events. Health Simulation Learning Centre, or test your knowledge of MRU's simulation space and technology with a live trivia session.

Winterization of campus irrigation system
This annual process is noisy as it involves a large air compressor that blows all the water out of the lines to prevent freezing and damage to the lines through winter. Those on campus should avoid areas where work is being done from Sept. 21 to 25 between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Melanie Peacock awarded the 2020 Canadian Human Resources Lifetime Achievement award
Associate professor of human resources Melanie Peacock, PhD, received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the 2020 Canadian Human Resources Awards. This distinguished and highest national honour recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the human resources industry as a whole through visionary people management strategies and leadership.


MRU research gaining reach

MRU has received over $5 million in new federal research support funding, including:

  • Tri-Agency grants with approximately $1.4 million awarded
  • Two new Canada Research Chairs: Ranjan Datta, PhD, Community Disaster Research and Cherie Woolmer, PhD, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
  • The first Canada Foundation for Innovation grants for Professor Gwen O'Sullivan, PhD (environmental science), and Assistant Professor Meg Wilcox and Associate Professor Brad Clark, PhD (journalism)
  • Tim Haney, PhD, sociology professor, and Paul Varella, PhD, associate professor in general management, received SSHRC Insight Development Grants

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
