Announcements

Province announces historic changes to nursing during MRU visit
On Nov. 23, the Government of Alberta chose Mount Royal University to make a ground-breaking nursing announcement. Minister of Health Sara Hoffman, deputy premier and MLA for Edmonton-Glenora, told a large crowd that new regulations will expand the scope of practice for registered nurses and nurse practitioners. Provost to host first-ever academic town hall
Out of a desire to increase communication with the campus community, Provost Lesley Brown, PhD, invites everyone to an academic town hall on Dec. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Ideas Lounge in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre. It has been a tremendous semester and there is much to share and celebrate. RSVP to provost@mtroyal.ca to receive a confirmation.

Board issues update on Collective Bargaining
Negotiations are continuing toward the renewal of the collective agreement between Mount Royal University and the Mount Royal Faculty Association. On Nov. 8 and 9, the negotiating teams engaged in two days of informal enhanced mediation, which was again facilitated by mediator Gary Furlong. While the negotiating teams were able to reduce the number of outstanding issues, no agreement was reached. Read more.

Reminder of early timesheet deadlines in December
The two pay periods in December occur back to back because of the University's holiday closure beginning Dec. 24. The timesheet deadline for the Dec. 14 pay is Dec. 11 for employees and Dec.12 for approvers. The timesheet deadline for the Dec. 20 payday is Dec. 31 for employees and Jan 2 for approvers. The paper source deadline for the Jan. 15 pay is Dec. 21.

2018 United Way fundraising campaign starts Dec. 1
Mount Royal’s 2018 United Way fundraising campaign officially kicks off Dec. 1. A credit card donation or payroll deduction can be made between Dec. 1 and Dec. 14. Funds raised will help many Calgarians who face tremendous challenges. Sign in with your mtroyal.ca email.

Understanding your role in workplace health and safety
Supervisors are accountable for the health and safety of those who report to them and whose work they oversee, ensuring that faculty and staff have read, understood and signed their Position Hazard Assessments and have completed their Safety Training on Blackboard (Safety Orientation, WHMIS 2015 & IT Security Awareness). Key areas successfully complete migration to Banner 9
HR/Payroll, Finance and University Advancement went live on schedule Nov. 14 with Banner 9. Banner is the core software system for many day-to-day operations. All post-secondaries that use it are required to migrate to Banner 9 by year end, involving a significant amount of work. The remaining functions in Banner 9 will be fully migrated in December.

Foot traffic may be rerouted in places this week
Please be aware of wet sandblasting being done to sidewalks around campus this week. Access to some walkways and secondary entrances may be limited. Safety barriers will be in place to guide pedestrians. Contact fm@mtroyal.ca with any questions.

Inspiration Awards recognize professor and project
Department of Child Studies and Social Work professor Gaye Warthe, PhD, recently garnered an Inspiration Award in acknowledgment
of her work to prevent family violence, sexual violence, child abuse and bullying. Mount Royal’s Stepping Up initiative, a research-based program focusing on the prevention of dating violence, was also recognized with an award. Read more.

Alumna one of six to win international scholarship
Bissett School of Business alumna Corrine Thiessen is one of six women worldwide to win a prestigious Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship from Zonta International. Finance professor Catherine Roy‐Heaton describes Thiessen as “of superior intelligence and (holding) superior analytical and communication skills.” Thiessen is currently working on post-graduate studies at the University of Victoria. Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
