Process for software purchases and updates
Due to annual audits of the University IT Controls by Alberta’s Auditor General's Office, IT Services (ITS) is required to facilitate software purchases, monitoring and preventing unauthorized software from being installed and used. All software must be properly licensed. Email licensemanager@mtroyal.ca with your questions.

Keep your passwords secret
Someone with your password can access all your personal information at MRU, as well as shared drives. This places not only you, but your coworkers at risk. Consider using a password manager such as KeePass2. Find out more here.

Staff sports every lunch hour
Drop-in staff sports are offered every lunch hour from noon to 1 p.m. for current MRSA or MRFA staff. These activities take place at the Stanley/Triple Gym and are a great way to stay active and connect with colleagues across campus. Get your colleagues involved in intramurals
Ever thought of registering a department team in your favourite sport? Mount Royal's intramural sports leagues are for everyone, regardless of previous experience or skill. Did you know?
New Student Orientation was attended by approximately 1,850 new students and helmed by 200 student leaders. About 350 staff and faculty members supported the two-day event to provide a positive and informative introduction to MRU life.

‘North-bound and pursued’
Associate professor Randy Nikkel Schroeder, PhD, of the Department of English, Languages and Culture’s new novel, Arctic Smoke, is being released this month by NeWest Press. The story follows aging punk Lor Kowalski as he and his band head north for a mysterious Artic festival tour. The work is described as “An absurdist punk-rock adventure through counter-counterculture’s most otherworldly spaces.” Read more.

Assessing the value of sport and recreation to a community
Associate Professor David Finch, PhD, and Professor David Legg, PhD, in collaboration with the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Institute for Community Prosperity are hosting Calgary’s inaugural ActiveCITY Summit on Sept. 18 at WinSport. They will be joined by 250 other leaders in sport and recreation to debate the future of an active economy. Register.

Faculty and student collaboration takes home conference award
Assistant professor Ran Ju, PhD, Associate Professor Sandra Braun, PhD, and MRU public relations students Dat Huynh and Sarah McCaffrey, won second place in the Top Paper Competition in the Public Relations Open Division at the 102nd annual conference of the Association for Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Professor’s play to be performed in New York City
In May, Associate Professor Susan Jacoby of the School of Nursing and Midwifery wrote and co-directed a play titled "Born in the Ruins" for the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The 56-minute performance highlights the important work of midwives and nurses. It will also be performed on Sept. 17 in New York City as part of the UN High Level Commission for Universal Health Coverage. More information.

MRU nursing history to reach a European audience
School of Nursing and Midwifery associate professor Marg Olfert is headed to Florence, Italy, in February to present her research, “The trail of an idea struggling for survival: Jean Mackie Establishes Canadian Nursing Education at Mount Royal College, 1964–68,” at the Florence 2020 International Conference on the History of Nursing, hosted by the European Association for the History of Nursing. Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
