Announcements

Update on collective bargaining
Negotiations for the next Collective Agreement between the Mount Royal Faculty Association and MRU began on Feb. 11 and as per the provisions in the Collective Agreement will resume, at the earliest, in mid-August. Similarly, bargaining between the Mount Royal Staff Association and MRU has paused for the summer. Both collective agreements expire on June 30, 2020, but until new collective agreements are in place the terms of the prior agreements remain.

Optimal Therapy has been renamed to become the MRU Injury & Prevention Clinic. Check out our new website and book your next appointment using the online booking system. Booking an appointment has never been easier.


Employee and Family Assistance Program offers new life-coaching program
Homewood Health's life-coaching program offers up to three telephone conversations with a psychologist. The sessions will be geared to helping people manage stress-related concerns and will include coaching on stress management, lifestyle and setting priorities, and tools such as meditation and relaxation techniques.

Online ergonomic assessments available
If you are working from home and are having difficulty setting up your workstation to be ergonomically comfortable, reach out to Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS@mtroyal.ca) for a virtual ergonomic assessment. Ergonomic hazards can often be solved with a few minor adjustments, and it's better to catch concerns before they become significant issues.


Visit the Taylor Centre online
The Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts is virtually connecting with the community through the Taylor Centre Online, providing a curated list of local online shows, performances, articles and videos available to enjoy. You'll see both new and familiar faces, with several featured artists who have previously visited the Bella Concert Hall.

Food services options
All food services on campus and in Wyckham House are presently closed. For those on campus looking to purchase food or beverages, Starbucks at 37 Street and 45 Avenue S.W. and Tim Horton's at 6 Richard Way S.W. are open.

UPass program suspended for the fall
Given Mount Royal’s plan for alternative delivery formats in the Fall 2020 semester, the UPass program will be deferred until Winter 2021. Students will not be charged any fees for UPass this fall. The City of Calgary offers other monthly transit passes, including low-income options. For students in need of a transit pass, more information can be found on the City of Calgary transit website. Please email parking@mtroyal.ca with your questions.

Member of Environmental Services management team earns COVID-19-related certification
Rebeka Bertram has received specialized training in standards for cleaning, disinfecting and PPE (personal protection equipment) from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council. The training included prevention, infection control and contamination control for infectious disease outbreaks. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Environmental Services team has followed AHS cleaning protocols to the highest standards.

“Tainted Water” wins CAJ Data Journalism Award
On May 30, the Canadian Association of Journalists announced “Tainted Water” as the winner of the 2019 Data Journalism Award. A collaboration with Concordia University’s Institute for Investigative Journalism, Associate Professor Janice Paskey led the team of journalism and broadcast media studies students: Alannah Page, Stephanie Hagenaars, Karina Zapata, Noel Harper, Christian Kindrachuk, Jo Horwood, Rose deSouza and Andrea Wong.

Shayla Breen recognized by GOA
Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides gave former president of the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University Shayla Breen a nod in May for her work in combatting sexual violence on campuses.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
