Remote work continues; small number of exceptions being planned

A reminder to employees and departments who have been working from home to not return to campus until advised to do so. The Planning Ahead Team is overseeing a process to plan a gradual return to campus for specific areas that must offer services in person. Please speak with your manager or director if you have questions


New Student Orientation online throughout the summer

New Student Orientation (NSO) has been proven to assist those new to post-secondary with success in their studies. With more student leaders than ever registered to make the transition as smooth as possible, NSO will be holding sessions throughout the summer to help students learn about Mount Royal, meet their future classmates and find out what will make them successful as a university student.

Library services available
The Library team at the Riddell Library and Learning Centre is at your service. Take advantage of the easy contactless book pick up, schedule a virtual appointment, put in a digitization request and access resources for remote instruction. Text and chat support and free online workshops are available for students. Access to the Library computer lab is now temporarily closed for the summer.

Mandatory annual cybersecurity and payment card industry training
The deadline for mandatory annual cybersecurity training has been extended from June 30 to July 31. PCI security awareness training, however, must still be completed by June 30. More information.

Summer working hours begin July 1
It is that time of year, even this year! Between July 1 and Aug. 14, standard summer operating hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a shortened, 30-minute lunch period. Exceptions may be necessary for some departments, and flexibility for employees balancing personal commitments with working from home continues to be supported.

Calgary Stampede Parade half-day in lieu
As we are all aware, the Calgary Stampede has been cancelled due to COVID-19. In lieu of the half-day that is designated to allow staff, exempt and management employees to attend the Stampede Parade, and as recognition for the challenging times that we continue to work through, managers may choose to hold a half-day during what would normally be Stampede week (July 3 to 10).

New Editorial Style Guide available
A new version of Mount Royal’s Editorial Style Guide is now available. Download the guide through the link, or find it under Employee/Resources and Timesheets on MyMRU underneath “Work Tools” at the bottom left-hand side of the page. This document provides style guidelines for anyone creating content for any of Mount Royal's publications, including mtroyal.ca. Questions about content can be sent to mbodnar@mtroyal.ca.

Upcoming power outages July 4, 10 and 11 will affect 'remote desktop' users
Employees who are set up to use 'remote desktop' will need to save their work and power down their campus computers from home on the evenings of three upcoming annual maintenance power outages. Please shut down by 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. Computers will automatically be turned on the following mornings at 8 a.m. Employees who are working on campus will need to power down their computers before leaving work on the Fridays before the outages and empty fridges of any perishables.

Collaborative LearningCITY project launches publications and webinars
Over the past six months, an interdisciplinary research team, in collaboration with Calgary Economic Development (CED), has been leading a project called LearningCITY, which was developed as a direct outcome of the High-Impact Talent Roundtable hosted last August at Mount Royal. Support for this project was provided by SAIT, CED, and the MRU Institutes for Community Prosperity and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Two reports have since been released (scroll to the bottom), with authors from MRU including Professors Evelyn Field, PhD, and Michael Uzoka, PhD, Assistant Professor Simon Raby, PhD, and Associate Professor Michael Roberts, PhD. A recent op-ed in the Calgary Herald by project leads Professor David Finch, PhD, Mary Moran and Jason Ribeiro (CED) and Janet Lane (Canada West Foundation) proposes a re-envisioned city-level learning system. Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
