Three new majors for the Bissett School of Business
Starting July 1, eligible students will be able to declare a major in three new areas: finance, international business and supply chain management. As all three were originally concentrations under the Bachelor of Business Administration, students will now be eligible to declare their majors and graduate as early as fall 2019.

New Code of Conduct for employees

Effective July 1, Mount Royal will have a new Code of Conduct mandated by changes to the Conflicts of Interest Act affecting all public sector and post-secondary employees in Alberta. Find out more.

Update your personal information for HR

Employees can now easily update their personal information on MyMRU. Simply visit the link under 'My HR Profile' to review or change your address, phone number and emergency contact information. It is important that HR has current employee information in the system.

Pride flag to fly
Starting Saturday, June 1, Mount Royal's pride flag will be raised in recognition of Pride Month. The month of June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969.

Heartland filming on campus
Cast and crew from CBC's Heartland will be filming at a number of locations on June 13 and 14 in the John H. Garden Memorial Park, Riddell Library and Learning Centre and Recreation.

Interested in being an extra?
If you would like to get some screen time as an extra on Heartland, submit a current picture and some general information (age, height, etc.), plus your availability on June 13 and 14, to Curtis Cripps, the extras casting director, at cortezcastingcanada@gmail.com. Interested employees should check with their supervisors to see if their participation can be accommodated. Depending on the required time commitment, it may be necessary to use vacation time.

Recyclable items needed for MRU Kids
MRU Kids is requesting help in collecting an assortment of recyclable materials. The needed recyclables and quantities are listed here. Materials can be delivered to the MRU Kids office, located in EA1016, during business hours. For more information, email mrukids@mtroyal.ca. Support is greatly appreciated.

Volunteer to get more healthy
The Integrative Health Coach program is seeking volunteer clients to be coached by students during their June 8 final exam. Students are training to help achieve wellness goals such as making healthy choices, stress reduction, goal-setting, improved financial stability and more. Learn more and sign up.

Recycling survey results

Nearly 400 employees participated in the recent survey of recycling and energy conservation habits, and 95 per cent said they recycle all or most of the time on campus. That's up from 75 per cent two years ago. By doing the right thing, students and employees are reducing our environmental footprint. Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey, and congratulations to the employee who won an MRU hoodie.

Update on recognition review

HR continues to consult internal stakeholders, research best practices and review all internal administrative data, and will announce a new and more meaningful recognition program for Mount Royal early next year. Employees are welcome to email recognition@mtroyal.ca with suggestions for program improvement. Employees reaching a long-service milestone this year will be contacted shortly.

Fire drill May 28

The campus community evacuated all buildings except Residence in excellent time during Tuesday's fire drill. Thank you to everyone for complying and to fire wardens for safely coordinating the evacuation. The next fire drill will take place in September. Empty fridges for EB building closure June 7 overnight
Please empty all fridges, save your work and power down your PC when you leave on Friday, June 7. The EB building will be closed until 6 a.m. Saturday for an electrical maintenance shutdown.

Overnight closures to main building June 14 and 15
The main building will close from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on consecutive overnight periods while electrical maintenance is done, and will reopen during the daytime. There will be no general access to the building during the closures. Please empty all fridges and power down PCs before the weekend.

Did you know?
The presidential installation will take place at all five Convocation ceremonies. Employees who are not gowned are encouraged to attend either ceremony on Thursday, June 6 or the morning ceremony on Friday, June 7, as there will be more seating available. Live streaming will also be available.

Bleed Blue – Celebrating MRU

MRU among first signatories to the Dimensions Charter
MRU is one of the first Canadian institutions to become a signatory to the Dimensions Charter to foster increased research excellence, innovation and creativity through greater equity, diversity and inclusion.

Alumni-made film receives two awards
A short film titled Memento Mori created by two graduates of Mount Royal’s Theatre Performance Diploma program — Anna Barker and Ryan Irving — garnered two 2019 Calgary Underground Film Festival Awards: the Special Jury Mention — Emerging Filmmaker Award and the Audience Award Best Canadian Short. Barker is also currently majoring in English at MRU.

Co-research by professor and students published
Associate Professor Peter Choate, PhD, of the Social Work Diploma program and five of his practicum students were recently published in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society for their research “Rethinking Racine v Woods from a Decolonizing Perspective: Challenging the Applicability of Attachment Theory to Indigenous Families Involved with Child Protection.”

Professor named the 2019 Hotchkiss Brain Institute Neuroscience Alumnus of the Year
Associate professor in the Department of Biology, Trevor Day, PhD, was awarded the title of the 2019 Hotchkiss Brain Institute Neuroscience Alumnus of the Year, which recognizes the outstanding performance of a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow or research fellow who trained in a neuroscience laboratory at the University of Calgary within the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.

Arctic research team earns Canada's highest honour
Professor Lynn Moorman, PhD, of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, is part of the SmartICE team, which has been awarded a Governor General’s Innovation Award for 2019. SmartICE is an award-winning project that integrates on-ice technology, remote sensing and Inuit knowledge to generate near real-time information of ice conditions for Arctic communities. Read more.

Excellence in nursing research and education
Bachelor of Nursing faculty members Cathy Carter-Snell, PhD, and Kerri Alderson were nominated for the CARNA (College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta) Awards in the areas of Nursing Excellence in Research and Nursing Excellence in Education (respectively). Read more.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
