President 'white-hatted' and distinguished visits to MRU

Calgary's mayor, Naheed Nehshi, presented MRU president Tim Rahilly with an official Smithbilt White Hat after a meeting at City Hall last week. The gift is considered the equivalent of being given the key to the city. The president also hosted several distinguished visitors last week, with Demetrios Nicolaides, the provincial minister of Advanced Education, touring campus on Sept. 11 and Jason Copping, minister of Labour and Immigration, stopping by on Sept. 12. Last weekend, Alberta’s minister of Community and Social Services, Rajan Sawhney, celebrated with Rahilly and graduates of the Employment Preparation Certificate program.

A little-known fact is that Mount Royal’s soccer teams play on the best outdoor field in the city when at home, which is what led it to being borrowed by another team during the Cougars' off season.

Fire drill next Monday
On Monday, Sept. 23 at 10 a.m., Mount Royal University will hold a practice fire drill that is expected to take less than 30 minutes. This drill will include an evacuation of the inside of all Lincoln Park campus buildings, with the exception of Residence buildings. It is mandatory for everyone to participate. Transitional Vocational Program (TVP) volunteer opportunity

First-Year Student Mentor Program applicants needed
Student Learning Services is currently recruiting for Mentors: Academic and Personal Success, where first-year students work with senior students to help with the transition to post-secondary. Faculty members are asked to refer first-year students to the program. Applications are due Sept. 22.

Campus-wide waste audit from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8
Facilities Management conducts a waste audit every couple of years to measure the campus's compliance with City of Calgary bylaws and performance against the sustainability goals of the University Strategic Plan. Results will be shared with the community once they're compiled.

English professor Natalie Meisner, PhD, has published a new book of poems titled Baddie One Shoe through Frontenac House. Her poems are odes to the renegades of the past and present who fight the powers that be with laughter.

Science website recognized with nomination
Associate professor of biology, Sarah Hewitt, PhD, has been nominated by the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada for the 2019 People’s Choice Awards: Canada’s Favourite Science Online for her website, The Science B-Sides. Browse the sites and vote for your favourite.


De-colonizing the social work profession
On Sept. 27, Associate Professor Peter Choate, PhD, of the Department of Child Studies and Social Work, will participate in a PolicyWise 2019 Annual General Meeting panel titled Evidence in Action. Choate will discuss a PolicyWise Seed Grant project that examined the implications of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's recommendations for how new social workers are educated.
