Wolf Blass Leads the Pack as InterVin’s Winery of the Year
Australia’s Wolf Blass won Winery of the Year honours at the 2016-17 InterVin International Wine Awards. It’s the second time in four years that the Barossa-based winery was the top-performing producer at the venerable international competition.
InterVin Head Judge Christopher Waters said Wolf Blass’ success at the competition, which was held in August at White Oaks Spa and Resort in Niagara-on-the-Lake, was impressive since it came across the broad range of their portfolio.
“It wasn’t just a case of small batch, high priced wines winning the day,” Waters explained. “InterVin judges praised Wolf Blass’ affordable Yellow Label range as well as its more premium releases. The quality across the board is something to admire.”
Chief Winemaker Chris Hatcher was especially thrilled to receive the award given Wolf Blass’ long connection with Canada. It’s been an important market for more than 30 years, with ongoing support for the Australian brand coming from wine novices and enthusiasts across the country.
“Winning the Winery of the Year is very exciting for Wolf Blass as it recognizes the quality and diversity of not just our luxury wines Black and Platinum Labels but also the Grey, Gold and Yellow that are so well supported in the Canadian market,” he said.
Nk’Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, British Columbia ranked second overall in the Winery of the Year rankings, earning the title Canadian Winery of the Year, while Trius Winery of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario placed third overall. Wakefield/Taylors Wines from Clare Valley, South Australia and Mission Hill Family Estate from Westbank, British Columbia round out the Top 5 producers.
During three-days of intensive blind tasting, InterVin judges were faced with a collection of more than 1,300 wines from 16 countries and awarded 48 gold, 222 silver and 555 bronze medals.
Those results including a selection of top value wines and a spotlight of the Top 10 Wineries of the Year from the competition will be formally announced in a special InterVin Awards issue of VINES Magazine. A selection of InterVin winners will also be featured during the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo Nov. 17-20 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building, Toronto.
