Reminder of early timesheet deadlines in December
The final
timesheet deadline for the Dec. 20 payday is Dec. 31 for employees and Jan. 2 for approvers. Employees should complete and submit their timesheets before the University closes for the holidays on Dec. 24. The paper source deadline for the Jan. 15 pay is Dec. 21. The two
pay periods in December occur back-to-back because of the University's closure between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2.
Update on presidential search from Sue Mallon, Board of Governors chair
Over the last few weeks, the search firm Boyden Canada has presented the Presidential Search Committee with a long list of excellent candidates. The Committee pared down this list and is conducting the first round of interviews this month. The search process is on track and progressing well. Provost to host first-ever academic town hall
Out of a desire to increase communication with the campus community, Provost

New research fund announced
The New Frontiers in Research Fund will invest $275 million over the next five years, and $65 million ongoing, to support international, interdisciplinary, fast-breaking and high-risk research.
The deadline for the first call for letters of intent is Jan. 11. Mount Royal's Office of Research, Scholarship and Community Engagement will be organizing information sessions beginning next week.
Support available to employees and students upset by demonstrators
Support is provided to students and employees when demonstrators set up graphic displays on campus. The courts consider university campuses to be public spaces. The University is obligated to respect the legal rights of demonstrators to be on campus while also ensuring that members of the community are supported. To be notified by email when the protesters are present, please contact aranson@mtroyal.ca.
Do a health and safety check before you leave for the holidays
Please ensure your office is free of hazards. Turn off your computer. Unplug all electrical devices, including Christmas lights, and especially heat-emitting small appliances like coffee makers. Move paper and cardboard away from radiators and powerbars, and remove all food from the office.
Tips for coping with common holiday stressors
Resources are available to help employees cope with this busy, and often stressful, time of year. Learn to recognize the signs of stress and how to alleviate them by taking care of yourself. Read more.

Midwifery student receives Métis award
On Sept. 22, Noelle Antonsen, a second-year student in Mount Royal's Bachelor of Midwifery program, was presented the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Award, which helps Métis Albertans realize self-sufficiency through post-secondary education and skills development.
Professor Kim Williams on pets and the Fort McMurray fire
MRU's Centre for Community Disaster Research (CCDR) just published Professor Kim Williams, PhD's, research essay, "Managing Pets During Disasters: Findings and Recommendations from the Horse River Fire, Fort McMurray, Alberta." The essay was also recently covered in the Calgary Herald, as well as in other media. The report is available on PreventionWeb, a project of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up
As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
