Ontario opens way to inclusionary zoning
New inclusionary zoning legislation in Ontario could soon give municipalities the power to require that builders include affordable housing units in all new residential developments. If passed, the Promoting Affordable Housing Act, 2016, will be the first of its kind in Canada and could take effect in early 2017.
Toronto could see new landlord licensing system
A new landlord licensing system may hit the Toronto apartment industry as early as Jan. 2017. Similar to the city’s DineSafe restaurant licensing system, it would entail annual inspections of building common areas and require landlords to develop detailed plans for maintenance, cleaning and pest control.

Rule tweak proposed for gas furnace retrofits

New fund for Quebec community housing repairs
The Chantier de l’économie sociale Trust and its partners, the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ, SSQ Financial Group and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation announced they are creating a $32.5-million patient capital investment fund called the Fonds d’aide à la rénovation de l’habitation communautaire (FondsARHC) to help support community housing renovations.
