Employee appreciation barbecue
Come together to kick off a new academic year and celebrate all employees for their year-round contributions to support student success. All staff and faculty are invited on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m to enjoy a barbecue lunch and door prizes on either the East Gate lawn (weather permitting) or Ross Glen Hall. There will be brief program from 12:30 to 1 p.m., with entertainment and remarks by the presidents of MRSA, MRFA and MRU. RSVP.

Web service outage this weekend
Starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 26 and ending at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 29 (with a possible extension until noon), the following web services will be unavailable due to maintenance being carried out: Banner/B9/SSB, Flexible Registration/BRM, T2 Web Sales, MyMRU and its online services, Library systems requiring single sign-on, and other systems using CAS single sign-on.

Cybersecurity training deadline extended to Aug. 31
The 2019 Basic IT Security Awareness course will be available on Blackboard until Aug. 31. This annual training is mandatory. If you have not completed the training or attended a workshop by then, you will not have met your cybersecurity training requirement for this year.

Update on East Gate road closure
Mount Royal Circle near East Gate will remain closed until August. Calgary Transit routes 18 and 20 will continue to be rerouted. Please check the signage at your bus stop or the Calgary Transit website.

No access to RLLC parking July 29 and 30
On Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30 there will be no access to the Riddell Library and Learning Centre parkade or parking lot 6A because of road work. Pass-holders can park in lot 7 or 8 behind the Riddell Library and Learning Centre (ED) and Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning (EC) on those two days.

Institute for Environmental Sustainability featured amongst energy thought leaders
The Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES) has been collaborating with the University of Calgary's Centre for Corporate Responsibility and Energy Dialogues out of San Diego. At the Calgary Energy Dialogues, a podcast was recorded of a panel discussion with the Institute's academic director Connie Van der Byl acting as moderator. Topics included the implications of Bill C-69, how regulatory approaches to approvals can be balanced and how the current energy climate is impacting investment in Canada. Listen here.


Religious studies professor to teach graduate course in Brazil
Religious studies professor Steven Engler, PhD, will be teaching a graduate course in methodology at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais in Brazil in August. The course will be conducted in Portuguese, and readings will include Engler's co-authored chapter on methods in Brazil's first broad overview of the field, the Compêndio de Ciência da Religião (Handbook of Religious Studies), along with several translated chapters, published in Brazil, from the first-ever handbook of research methods in religious studies in English, The Routledge Handbook of Research Methods in the Study of Religion, which was co-edited by Engler.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
