Call for nominations for 2019 Distinguished Faculty Awards, Credit

Please consider nominating a deserving colleague to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Mount Royal faculty for excellence in teaching, service and scholarship. The deadline for nominations is Fri., March 1. Past recipients, eligibility criteria, selection criteria and nominating procedures are detailed at mru.ca/DFA.


Celebrate! Teaching & Learning at MRU: Call for Proposals
Propose a lightning talk, roundtable, individual or collaborative presentation! We are looking for ideas that highlight your teaching and learning journey – inside and outside the classroom. Employee recognition program on hold this year
This program is on hold for one year to rebuild into one that is meaningful to employees. The Distinguished Faculty Awards (under the Office of the Provost) will go ahead because they are tied into national opportunities. Updates will be shared with the campus community. If you have input please email recognition@mtroyal.ca.

New ablution stations and parent room now open
Two rooms for Muslim students and employees to wash before prayer are now open near the Meditation Centre (W201). Campus Equity and Meaningful Inclusion (CEMI) also celebrated the opening of a new parent room, in F122, for students and employees with children who need a quiet space.

Support available to employees and students upset by demonstrators 
Support is provided to students and employees when demonstrators set up graphic displays on campus. The courts consider university campuses to be public spaces. The University is obligated to respect the legal rights of demonstrators to be on campus, while also supporting the community. To be notified by email when protesters are present, contact aranson@mtroyal.ca.

Funding opportunity for faculty in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Government of Canada is offering a grant to Canadian professors and researchers to teach or conduct research, for a short period, in Latin America and the Caribbean. Visit the Faculty Mobility Program for details or contact Dianne MacDonald.


Overloaded shelves pose a safety risk
Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is finding overloaded shelving in offices. Wall-mounted shelving is designed to hold one row of medium-sized books. If you notice a shelf pulling away from the wall, empty it immediately and put in a Frontline request to have it repaired. Contact EH&S with any safety questions.

Learn healthy eating habits and financial planning skills
Human Resources is providing a number of sessions related to personal wellness and financial planning in February and March, including an LAPP information session and a two-day retirement planning seminar. Check out the events calendar or contact Janine Charko in HR (local 5669) for more information.

New art exhibit on Main Street 
Mount Royal's Art Committee unveiled a new year-long photography exhibit on Main Street. Called ‘Identity’, the exhibit is part of the Exposure Photography Festival and explores identity through individuality, conformism, societal expectation and cultural norm. 

Put uncoated, non-waxy food containers in organics 
Most cardboard food containers, muffin papers and wooden chopsticks ― but not Styrofoam ― can go in the organics bin. When we produce less garbage, we reduce our environmental foot footprint. Do the right thing: put your lunch leftovers (container and all) in organics.

Jenny Limoges was recognized for her commitment to mentorship with an Outstanding Futrure Alumni Award. She stays connected through the Harry G. Schaefer Mentorship program and by mentoring other students as a Learning Peer


Anderson puts people and pigs to pen in new book
Associate Dean Joe Anderson, PhD, of the Faculty of Arts recently had West Virginia University Press publish his book, Capitalist Pigs: Pigs, Pork, and Power in America. The book examines the changing inter-species relationship between people and pigs from the Colombian Exchange in the region that became the United States.

Alberta Education Program student selected for Top 30 Under 30
Aboriginal Education Program student, Gleniela Ariel Crawler, has been selected as a 2019 Top 30 Under 30 from the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation for her work promoting Indigenous rights globally, as well as her service in the Morley community.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
