Mount Royal's first chancellor named

TransAlta CEO and President Dawn Farrell will become Mount Royal University's first chancellor following a unanimous decision from the board of governors. As the ceremonial head of the University, Farrell will preside over formal occasions and further connect Mount Royal with the community.

Presidential Advisory Committee to advance BIPOC statement and actions

Last week President and Vice-Chancellor Tim Rahilly shared a message condemning racism and standing with Black Lives Matter. Those wanting to provide input into work to develop a broader statement and action plan can email comments@mtroyal.ca.


Getting ready

Mount Royal University’s faculty and staff have been busy preparing supports and services to help new and returning students get ready for the upcoming semester, and Marketing and Communications has put everything in one place to assist students in navigating a digital learning environment. The new hub can be found at mru.ca/GettingReady.

Intersections photo exhibit removed from Main Street

After an important and thoughtful discussion with members of the campus community, the Art Committee has removed the Intersections photography exhibit from Main Street in advance of its normal refresh. The committee heard the concerns expressed about the stereotyped depiction of racialized communities, and has committed to engagement with broader perspectives in development of future exhibits.

New VPN service for remote work
Mount Royal now uses GlobalProtect for its VPN service. If you are still using Pulse Secure and SRAS to connect to your workstation remotely or to access internal web pages or web-based applications such as FAST and Banner, please switch to Glo
balProtect as soon as possible. More information. If you only download and upload files using the MyMRU link or by visiting secure.mtroyal.ca, the change to GlobalProtect does not affect you.


MAPS Peer Mentorship Program offers online summer Q&A sessions
Over the summer the MAPS Peer Mentorship Program is hosting several Q&A sessions for incoming and returning students. Peer mentors from each faculty will be available to answer any questions students might have about their academic program, getting involved in campus activities and events, and more. Encourage students to join the Social Entrepreneurship Sprint

The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Trico Charitable Foundation are launching a one month paid internship called the Social Entrepreneurship Sprint that will engage 20 MRU students in using the tools of social entrepreneurship to tackle a local social or environmental problem. Applications are open until July 15. The program will run from Aug. 4 to Sept. 11.

Mount Royal professor takes home AMPA Volunteer of the Year award
Department of English, Languages and Cultures' instructor
Micheline Maylor, PhD, has been named the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association (AMPA) Volunteer of the Year. This title is bestowed upon a person involved with an AMPA member magazine that has “bettered the Alberta magazine industry through their involvement and has inspired others to take part in the industry.” Maylor served as the Calgary Poet Laureate from 2016 2018, acting as an artistic ambassador for the city of Calgary.

Student wins summer intern contest
Mount Royal student-athlete Jace Timmer was one of 11 winners of the Green Dream Bloggers, a Forest Products Association of Canada’s summer internship contest. The contest has run since 2013 and helps students working in the forest products sector with opportunities to promote their experiences working in forests and mills during the summer. The 11 winners will receive a scholarship to help with their education.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign-up

As each semester begins (August/September and December/January), areas with ongoing employee activities can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group) for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google Group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for guidelines.
