Omni King Edward to restore iconic ballroom

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

The Crystal Ballroom in Toronto’s historic Omni King Edward Hotel will undergo a $6.5 million restoration beginning August 2016.

The 5,000-square-foot ballroom first opened in 1922 on the 17th floor of the city’s first luxury hotel and soon became the “it” place to be. Many prestigious galas and social functions took place there from the 1920s to the 1970s.

“This is a significant historical space that was at one time the epicenter of Toronto’s colourful social scene,” said Christophe Le Chatton, general manager of The Omni King Edward Hotel. “We are looking forward to recreating it into a venue that brings back its former glory while reaffirming the Crystal Ballroom’s position as the premiere social function venue in the city.”

Less than a year ago, the hotel underwent a $40 million renovation that kept pace with the original old-world interior. The ballroom restoration is expected to be similar. The floor of the pre-function space will be finished in mosaic tile and a new permanent bar will be designed to reflect detailing of the original era. Carpet will evoke the early 1920s, but with a contemporary twist.

Updated chandeliers and wall sconces will feature ornate crystal elements. The 12-metre high coffered ceilings, mouldings and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic city views, will remain dominant features.

An official grand opening will take place in early 2017. Moncur Design Associates Inc. and Omni Hotels & Resorts are responsible for the new look and design of the ballroom.
