Nursing Outside the Box: What TB can tell us about global health and the power of nurses to change the world
When: Feb 28, 2019; 10am-11:50am
Room no: Y224 LP (near West Gate entrance of Main Building)
Abstract: Humans have been trying to defeat tuberculosis for thousands of years, with little success to show for the billions of dollars and hours devoted to its eradication. This ancient disease has a lot to teach us about the sociopolitical challenges we face in working toward a more just, equitable, and healthy planet. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in global TB control work, D’Arcy Richardson will describe how the state of global health may be directly linked to our current economic model, and how nurses can play a critical role in shaping a brighter future if they expand their definition of nursing practice beyond the boundaries of the hospital or clinic to create a case management model for the world.
Speaker bio: D’Arcy Richardson, RN, PHN, CNS, MSN has tried almost everything once. After an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from Brown University, she took advantage of diverse employment opportunities, including veterinary assistant, World Wildlife Fund intern, wholesale florist, waitress, hazardous waste site communications specialist, and global vagabond before deciding on a career in public health. She received a Master’s degree in Community Health Nursing from the University of California San Francisco and has worked in TB control with the United States Agency for International Development, PATH (Seattle), KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation (Netherlands), and World Health Organization/Stop TB Partnership. She has served on numerous global committees and task forces, and has authored many manuals and papers on TB-related topics. She has managed multi-year, multi-million dollar TB projects in countries across the globe, and has a particular passion for teaching about patient empowerment and person-centered approaches to health care.
