New and improved school facilities opening soon

Friday, September 11, 2015

Ontario students will soon benefit from new schools, as well as school additions and renovations. Over the next few months, at least 21 new schools and nine facilities with major additions and renovations will open to students. These renovations are thanks to an investment of almost $360 million from the Ontario government and extensive planning by local school boards.

“Our government is proud to invest in capital projects that are delivering better buildings for better learning,” said Liz Sandals, Minister of Education, in a press release. “These projects are bringing students and communities together and in some cases, reducing the cost of under-used space so we can reinvest savings back into the classroom.”

The projects will provide improved facilities and enhanced learning opportunities for thousands of students, and is part of the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history. Since 2003, Ontario has invested approximately $12.9 billion in school infrastructure, including building close to 725 new schools and more than 700 additions and renovations.

Over the next 10 years, the government plans to invest more than $11 billion to help build new schools in regions of high growth, improve school facilities and invest in projects to reduce surplus space in the case of school consolidations. In addition, in April 2015, Ontario committed $120 million in new funding to build safe, high quality, licensed child care spaces in schools across the province.
