Historic Guild Inn to be restored for reopening

The Guild Inn, a historical property located on the Scarborough Bluffs just outside of Toronto, is slated for reopening in December 2016 as The Guild Inn Estate, a special events venue, following a restoration and renovation. New owner Dynamic Hospitality Group broke ground in November alongside Toronto Mayor John Tory and other special guests.

Giancarlo Garofalo Architect Inc. and Peter Pascaris of Queen’s Quay Architects International are the design consultants on the project, which has a projected budget cost of $20 million. They will be joined by architect and heritage consultant Philip Goldsmith, who provides architectural services such as restoration, adaptive reuse and new works. He also works with technically demanding restoration work to conserve cultural heritage.

The Guild Inn started as the only Depression-era artists’ colony in Canada. Surrounded by parklands dotted with historical monuments and artifacts, the Guild Inn was once an Arts and Crafts style private residence with studios and workshops surrounded by 88 acres of gardens and woodlands.

The property was acquired by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to be used as a public park with a hotel in 1978, but its doors closed in 2001. Following the restoration, the 40,000-square-foot project will be a combination of the restored historical building with a state-of-the-art addition. The grounds will feature historical and priceless works of art.

“Our goal is to strive for the creation of a responsible and vital contemporary work, which harmonizes with its environment,” said the design team of Garofalo, Pascaris and Goldsmith. “We are committed to respecting and maintaining the history and significance of the Guild Inn, while reviving the grandeur and legacy of this great iconic landmark in the city.”
