Tom Buchanan came to Mount Royal in 2012 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to serve as Chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department (2012-2022). He received his PhD from the University of Cincinnati in 2002. Tom's previous work with underserved, vulnerable, and marginalized children and families heavily influences his sociological interests. His research focuses on examining gender inequalities at work, in organizations, and in families. His research also focuses on student adjustment to the university life stage. In this area, Tom explores helicopter parenting and the university life stage of students experiencing disabilities. Tom enjoys collaborating on research projects with colleagues and students and is a dedicated advocate for students interested in finding sociological work after MRU.
