Manitoba government invests in public facilities

Monday, August 24, 2015

Manitoba’s government announced that it is investing more than $1-million in improving public and not-for-profit community facilities. This will include rehabilitating, upgrading and expanding several of Winnipeg’s popular recreation spots and creating more green space, said Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell.

“The Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program is providing long-term recreational and wellness benefits for Winnipeg’s communities,” said Minister Caldwell in a press release. “These investments make a real difference in the lives of families by providing modern, up-to-date recreational resources.”

The investment will be used on 48 new projects, including major upgrades for the St. Vital Curling Club such as painting and parking lot repair.

“The St. Vital Curling Club started in this neighbourhood over 80 years ago and has now grown to over 1,000 users on a weekly basis,” said Minister Caldwell. “It’s venues like this that are important to the fabric of the community, as they bring local families together to share, socialize and take part in physical activity. This program is assisting in providing accessible and safe recreation facilities to all of Winnipeg.”

A third application intake for the Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program began on May 11. It resulted in the approval of funding for 48 projects that will provide long-term wellness and recreation benefits through the rehabilitation, improvement or expansion of community assets such as athletic and cultural facilities.

This $1-million investment is part of a $7.5-million, three-year program launched in Manitoba in 2013. Through the program, the province has already committed funding toward 195 projects aimed at upgrading community centres, parks, trails, bike paths, arenas and gyms in Winnipeg.
