Introducing the Mount Royal Board of Governors
In the fall Mount Royal welcomed 10 new members to our Board of Governors (BOG). The Board members are eager to introduce themselves to our community and use their skills to assist the University in achieving its strategic goals. Meet the BOG team here!

Budget Development for 2018/19-2020/21
Budget development is now underway. As part of planning, the President's Executive Committee, as supported by University Strategic Council, has established three values to guide our budget development, and five principles to support our decision-making. These can be found in a presentation on MyMRU on the Financial Matters tab, in the Budgeting section.

Lesley Brown, Provost and Vice-President Academic and Annalise Van Ham, Vice-President Finance and Administration, will visit groups around campus to present these budget values and principles and to discuss and answer questions specific to each area. More information will be shared as budget development progresses. In the meantime, please feel free to contact Annalise or Lesley with questions.


Fire drill on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m.
This practice fire drill is expected to take up to 30 minutes and includes an evacuation of all Lincoln Park campus buildings except Residence. Everyone must participate. Learn more here.

Fire alarms in the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts
Water damage sustained on the weekend in the Taylor Centre (ED), caused several fire alarms in the building were damaged and disabled. To compensate while repairs are underway, additional security staff will be on duty to monitor and ensure safety in the event of an actual fire. Some false alarms may occur during this time. Employees are advised to evacuate their building if an alarm sounds, strobe lights are active or if directed by the mass communication system.

Employee Wellness Fair
The Employee Wellness Fair will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lincoln Park Room (J301). Learn more about community and campus wellness resources and explore the interactive displays. No sign up is required.

Employee Wellness Consultation sessions will be held on Feb. 6, 9 and 16. Sign up for one of these five sessions to engage with your colleagues in a conversation around wellness, allowing MRU to further understand and support your needs. Sign up here.

Help keep Mount Royal's computer network safe
This campus-wide survey will help determine steps IT Services needs to take to continue to keep cybercriminals at bay. The survey takes less than four minutes to complete and is anonymous. Those who complete the questions can choose to enter a draw for a $60 gift certificate to The Table. Be a superhero...complete the survey!

Workplace Health Promotion offers weight-management program
If your New Year's resolutions include a healthy-weight goal, a weekly program that could help is coming to campus. The 16-week noon-hour program starts Feb. 7. The program also includes online support. Payment is made through payroll deduction. Only 35 spots are available. Register here.

Winter Walk ― Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 12:15 p.m.
Winter Walk Day encourages people across Alberta to be active outdoors in winter. More than 100,000 Albertans took part last year. Encourage your colleagues to come out and walk. Meet at the Recreation Entrance and do the MRU loop. Let's get walking!

Volunteer tutors needed
The Transitional Vocational Program is recruiting volunteer tutors for the Adult Literacy Tutoring Service (ALTS) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All tutoring materials are provided and tutors meet one-on-one with their student to focus on basic math, reading, writing and communication literacy skills. Contact Sara Markin if interested.

Nursing profs earn elite nominations
Sonya Jakubec, PhD and Mohamed El Hussein, both professors in Mount Royal's School of Nursing and Midwifery, were each recently nominated for a 2018 College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) Excellence Award for Research. This is the second year in a row both educators have received this honour.

Start of semester emails, with option for distribution list sign up

As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activites can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group), for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for procedures.
