Remembering Reyn Johnson and Jeff Bird
Feb. 13 marked one year since the accident where two aviation instructors, Reynold (Reyn) Johnson and Jeffrey (Jeff) Bird, tragically died. Our hearts remain with Reyn’s and Jeff’s families and friends, and with all who knew these two exceptional individuals.

Internet interruptions Feb. 17 and 18
IT Services will perform maintenance on the data centre network on Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (four hours each evening). During this interval, access to Internet-based services may be interrupted for periods of up to five minutes. If you notice any additional interruptions, contact ITS at 403.440.6000.

Do you have a colleague whose work is transformational? Someone you admire for making a distinguished contribution or accomplishing exceptional results? Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Distinguished Employee Awards. Nominate a staff member, manager, team or credit-free instructor. Nominate a faculty member (full time or contract).

Major electrical shutdown March 10
On Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m., the electricity will be shut off in the entire main building for approximately 12 hours. The building will be closed during this time. The shutdown is to tie-in new green energy infrastructure and complete necessary maintenance work. Please empty fridges and power down computers and other electronics on Friday, March 9 before you leave.

Encourage standout students to apply for the SAMRU Awards
The Students' Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) asks faculty members to encourage their students to apply for this year's SAMRU Awards. Criteria includes a high level of commitment to the campus community and strong academic achievement. The deadline for applications is Feb. 28.

Hundreds of truckloads of snow removed
So far this season the Facilities Management Grounds team has shipped more than 200 truckloads of snow offsite. Here's an example of the effort it takes to keep the campus safely cleared of snow and ice.

MRU students win geoscience trivia contest, headed to Canadians
In January, four Mount Royal University geology students attended the Western Inter-University Geoscience Conference (WIUGC). During the conference the Regional Divisions of Challenge Bowl (held by the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists) was won by MRU students Darby Desrosiers and Alex Patterson, who are now headed to the Canadian National Finals at the GeoConvention 2018 in Calgary. As each semester begins (Aug./Sept. and Dec./Jan.), areas with ongoing employee activites can send an email to all employees describing their semester activities. Employees can then choose to opt in to that area's distribution list (Google Group), for regular updates. If you would like to send an email and/or set up a Google group for your area, please contact Marketing and Communications for procedures.
