Yukon College receives infrastructure investments

Thursday, May 11, 2017

The federal and Yukon governments are investing in renewing the infrastructure at Yukon College. A total investment of $3.59 million ($1.53 million each from the Governments of Canada and Yukon and $531,528 from Yukon College) will support the renovation of the library to create a modern Innovation Commons at Yukon College’s Ayamdigut Campus in Whitehorse, as well as the upgrade of the power supply to the campus.

The funding from the Government of Canada is being allocated through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, which will enhance and modernize research facilities on Canadian campuses and improve the sustainability of these facilities.

After renovations are complete, students, professors and researchers will have access to state-of-the-art facilities that advance the country’s best research. They will make use of specially designed spaces that foster collaboration, learning and skills training.

The Government of Yukon funded the design stage of these two projects in 2015 and 2016. The strategic investment in Yukon College’s power supply benefits Ayamdigut Campus, as well as the Yukon Arts Centre, the Yukon Archives and the Yukon Housing Seniors Complex, as electrical upgrades are needed before the site can accommodate any future growth.

“The Innovation Commons project will bring together learning, research and project development to create a modern and technologically innovative space for students, faculty, and researchers at Yukon College,” said Yukon’s Minister of Education, Tracy-Anne McPhee, in a press release. “Both the renovation to create the Innovation Commons and the power supply upgrades support Yukon College as it moves towards becoming a university.”
